Blackrat: Whiskey and blasphemy

04/05/14  ||  Cobal

When I first picked “Whiskey and blasphemy” I did have some expectations: I was ready to listen to some laid-back, white sneakers-friendly music in the vein of all those fun blackened punk releases of today. Instead, Blackrat from Canada go for a most stormy and presumably macabre sound fusing the heritage of the bands of old. Is it some thrashier than Aura Noir, more aggressive than Venom and way darker than Slayer vibe here? I thought so. Perhaps some Hellhammer too.

It would be seriously difficult for me to dislike such a thing, especially if these people had the decency of keeping the songs short and straight. However, something that really grinds my gears is listening to something that really appears like a complete rip-off to me. Not all songs of course, but a couple are just shameless copies of classics from the 80s.

In short, the only possible value here goes to the ones who play this—I reckon they’re having the time of their lives rehearsing, and probably some low budget gig if you haven’t shit to do some Friday night.

5,5/10: Whatever happened to the booze?
